Jeanette Rankin was the first woman elected to congress in 1916 representing Montana. During her congressional career she was known for voting against going to war, both WWI and WWII. “As a woman I can’t go to war, and I refuse to send anyone else.” She helped create the Committee for Women’s Suffrage which opened the topic up for debate. She is still the only woman congressional representative ever elected for Montana.
She was highly involved in the Suffrage movement from joining several Suffrage organizations, to lobbying congress, becoming president of the Montana Women’s Suffrage Association, and more. She was the first woman to speak before the Montana legislature on behalf of women rights. She participated in the National Women’s Party march in Washington D.C. She dedicated to helping others. She never married. She witnessed, WWI, WWII, the Great Depression, The Vietnam War, and the Women’s Liberation Movement. "I want to be remembered as the only woman who ever voted to give women the right to vote.” “If I had my life to live over, I would do it all again, but this time I would be nastier.”

I am creating 100 paintings celebrating 100 of the thousands of women who fought for suffrage in the United States. Many people cannot name five American Suffragists and my goal is to use my artwork to change that.
Each piece is sixteen inches square. The palette for each piece is limited to purple, white, and yellow; these colors represent those on the National Women’s Party flag. Each piece also features a star in the background reminiscent of the famous Suffrage flag. There is a specific focus on bringing light to suffragists of color to highlight their work since they are often overlooked. Not only does each piece feature a portrait of a Suffragist, it also includes text detailing information about their lives. For instance, that Mary Ann Shadd Cary owned her own newspaper. Roughly every day I will be posting a new Suffragist painting up until the big anniversary on August 26th, 2020. For every piece there will be information about each woman. I will also include a few bonus pieces showing my process of creating these works, great resources people can use to find out more information about these women, and more. |
